ದಿನಾಂಕ 28-07-2012 ರಂದು ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವು ಸಮಾಜಘಾತುಕ ಶಕ್ತಿಗಳು ಹೋಮ್‌ಸ್ಟೇವೊಂದರ ಮೇಲೆ ದಾಳಿ ನಡೆಸಿ ಹಲವು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಹೆಣ್ಣುಮಕ್ಕಳ ಮೇಲೆ ದೌರ್ಜನ್ಯ ಎಸಗಿರುವುದು ಇಡೀ ನಾಡಿಗೇ ಗೊತ್ತಿರುವಂತಹ ಸಂಗತಿ. ಈ ಘಟನೆಯನ್ನು ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತನ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯದ ಭಾಗವಾಗಿ ಸ್ಥಳಕ್ಕೆ ಧಾವಿಸಿ ಪ್ರಾಮಾಣಿಕವಾಗಿ ವರದಿ ಮಾಡಿದ ಕಸ್ತೂರಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಚಾನಲ್‌ನ ಮಂಗಳೂರು ವರದಿಗಾರ ನವೀನ್ ಸೂರಿಂಜೆ ಅವರನ್ನು ಪೋಲಿಸರು ಸಾಕ್ಷಿಯಾಗಿ ಪರಿಗಣಿಸದೆ ಆರೋಪಿಯಾಗಿ ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಿ ಹಲವಾರು ಸೆಕ್ಷನ್‌ಗಳ ಅಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನವೀನರ ಮೇಲೆ ಸುಳ್ಳು ಆರೋಪಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊರೆಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇದರ ಪರಿಣಾಮವಾಗಿ ನವೀನ್ ಸೂರಿಂಜೆಯವರು ಪೋಲಿಸರಿಂದ ನವೆಂಬರ್ 7, 2012 ರಂದು ತಡರಾತ್ರಿ ಬಂಧಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಸಾಕ್ಷಿಯನ್ನಾಗಿ ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಬೇಕಿದ್ದ ನವೀನ್ ಸೂರಿಂಜೆಯನ್ನು ಆರೋಪಿಯನ್ನಾಗಿ ಹೆಸರಿಸಿ ಇಂದಿನವರೆಗೂ ಬಂಧನದಲ್ಲಿರುವಂತೆ ನೋಡಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವುದು ಕೇವಲ ಪತ್ರಿಕಾ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯದ ಹರಣ ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲ. ಜೊತೆಜೊತೆಗೆ ಸಂವಿಧಾನಬದ್ಧ ನಾಗರಿಕ ಹಕ್ಕುಗಳನ್ನು ಹತ್ತಿಕ್ಕುವಂತಹ ದಮನಕಾರಿ ನಡೆಗಳೂ ಸಹ.

ನಿರಪರಾಧಿ ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತನ ಈ ಬಂಧನದ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಈಗಾಗಲೆ ನಾಡಿನ ಹಲವಾರು ಮಾಧ್ಯಮ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳು, ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತರು ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಜ್ಞಾವಂತ ನಾಗರಿಕರು ತಮ್ಮ ವಿರೋಧವನ್ನು ದಾಖಲಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಮತ್ತು, ಸರ್ಕಾರ ಈ ಕೂಡಲೆ ನವೀನ್ ಸೂರಿಂಜೆಯವರ ಮೇಲೆ ಹೂಡಲಾಗಿರುವ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಸುಳ್ಳು ಆರೋಪಗಳನ್ನು ಕೈಬಿಡಬೇಕೆಂದು ಆಗ್ರಹಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಹಲವಾರು ಸಲ ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತರ ನಿಯೋಗ ರಾಜ್ಯಪಾಲರನ್ನು ಮತ್ತು ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಭೇಟಿ ಮಾಡಿ ಮನವಿ ಪತ್ರ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಈ ವಿಚಾರವನ್ನು ಗೃಹಮಂತ್ರಿಗಳ ಗಮನಕ್ಕೂ ತಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಮತ್ತು ಶಾಸನಸಭೆಯಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಈ ವಿಚಾರ ಪ್ರಸ್ತಾಪವಾಗಿದೆ.

ಆದರೆ, ಮೇಲಿನ ಈ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಗಳೂ ಯಾವುದೇ ಫಲ ನೀಡಿಲ್ಲ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಇಂತಹ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತರು, ಲೇಖಕರು, ಮತ್ತು ನಾಡಿನ ಪ್ರಜೆಗಳಾದ ನಾವೆಲ್ಲ ಮೌನವಾಗಿರುವುದು ತರವಲ್ಲ. ಈ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ “ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತರ ಅಕ್ರಮ ಬಂಧನ ವಿರೋಧಿ ವೇದಿಕೆ”ಯ ಮೂಲಕ ಮೂರು ದಿನಗಳ ಉಪವಾಸ ಸತ್ಯಾಗ್ರಹವನ್ನು ಹಮ್ಮಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ನಾಡಿನ ಅನೇಕ ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತರ ಸಂಘಟನೆಗಳು, ಲೇಖಕ-ಲೇಖಕಿಯರು, ನಾಗರಿಕ ಹಕ್ಕುಗಳ ಹೋರಾಟಗಾರರು ಬೆಂಬಲ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ನಾಡಿನ ಜನತೆಯೂ ಸಹ ಈ ವಿಚಾರವಾಗಿ ಬೆಂಬಲ ನೀಡಬೇಕೆಂದು ಈ ಮೂಲಕ ಕೋರಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೇವೆ.

Forum Against Illegal Arrest of Journalists

 Sub: Three-day fast against the illegal arrest of journalist Naveen Soorinje

As you are aware, a group of anti-social elements attacked students and girls at a Homestay in Mangalore on July 28, 2012. In pursuit of his professional commitments, Kasturi Newz24 journalist Naveen Soorinje visited the spot and conscientiously reported the outrage.

However, instead of taking Mr. Soorinje on-board as a witness in the case, the Mangalore police foisted false charges against him and made him an accused in the case. As a result of this manipulation of the law, Naveen was arrested on November 7, 2012 and has been in judicial custody ever since.

The listing of Mr. Soorinje as an accused and not a witness, is not just an affront to press freedom but also a grave violation of his Constitutionally guaranteed right to liberty and freedom of speech.

Outraged by the arrest of an innocent, several journalists’ organisations, senior journalists, as well as common citizens have registered their protest and demanded that the government drop its proceedings against him. Many delegations of journalists have also met the Governor and the Chief Minister in this regard and submitted memorandums seeking Mr. Soorinje’s immediate release. The issue was also taken up with the Home Minister on the floor of the State legislative assembly during the recently concluded session at Belgaum.

Unfortunately, all these efforts have failed to bear fruit. In these circumstances, journalists, writers and citizens of Karnataka have decided that it is no longer prudent to remain silent in the face of such a serious atrocity. They have come together to form the “Forum Against Illegal Arrest of Journalists” and taken a decision to hold a three-day fast to protest against the wrongful incarceration of Naveen Soorinje.

Many journalists, writers and human rights activists have already expressed their support for this agitation. It is our hope that common citizens of the State too will join the cause and stand up for what is right.
