ಹುಬ್ಬಳ್ಳಿ ಧಾರವಾಡ ನಗರಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದು ದಶಕವೇ ಕಳೆದು ಹೋಯಿತು. ಇಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಬಂದ ಮೇಲೆ ನನಗೆ ಜಿಗುಪ್ಸೆ ಮೂಡಿಸಿದ ಇಬ್ಬರು ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳೆಂದರೆ, ಒಬ್ಬರು, ವಾಮನ ಬೇಂದ್ರೆ. ಮತ್ತೊಬ್ಬರು ಪಾಟೀಲ ಪುಟ್ಟಪ್ಪ.
ಕನ್ನಡದ ಅನನ್ಯ ಕವಿ ಬೇಂದ್ರೆಯವರ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯವನ್ನು ಯಾರಿಗೂ ಕೊಡದೆ, ಈ ತಲೆಮಾರಿಗೆ ಬೇಂದ್ರೆಯವರ ಕವಿತೆ ಸಿಗದ ಹಾಗೆ ನೋಡಿಕೊಂಡ ಅವಿವೇಕಿ ವಾಮನ ಬೇಂದ್ರೆ. ಬೇಂದ್ರೆಯವರ ಕವಿತೆಗಳನ್ನ ಕಲಸು ಮೆಲೋಗರ ಮಾಡಿ, ಔದಂಬರ ಗಾಥೆ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇಂದ್ರೆ ಕುಟುಂಬದ ವಂಶವೃಕ್ಷ ಸಹಿತ ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಿ ಅದನ್ನು ಮೈಸೂರು ಒಂಟಿ ಕೊಪ್ಪಲು ಪಂಚಾಗ ಮಾಡಿದ ಪುಣ್ಯ ಪುರುಷನೀತ, ಶತಮಾನದ ಕವಿತೆಗಳ ಸಂಕಲನಕ್ಕೂ ಸಹ ಕವಿತೆ ಕೊಡಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲ, ನನ್ನೆದುರಿಗೆ ಹಂಪಿ ವಿ.ವಿ. ಉಪಕುಲಪತಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದ ಎಂ.ಎಂ. ಕಲುಬುರ್ಗಿ ಹಾಗು ಮಲ್ಲೇಪುರಂ ವೆಂಕಟೇಶ್ ’ಸಮಗ್ರ ಕಾವ್ಯ ತರುತ್ತೇವೆ,’ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿ 5 ಲಕ್ಷ ಗೌರವ ಸಂಭಾವನೆ ನೀಡಲು ಹೋದಾಗ ತಿರಸ್ಕರಿಸಿದ ಮಹಾಶಯ ಈತ.
ಇನ್ನು ಪಾಪು ಹೆಸರಿನ ಪುಟ್ಟಪ್ಪನವರದೇ ಒಂದು ದೊಡ್ಡ ವೃತ್ತಾಂತ. 1967 ರಿಂದ ಧಾರವಾಡದ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಕೇಂದ್ರವಾದ ವಿದ್ಯಾವರ್ಧಕ ಸಂಘದ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ ಅದನ್ನು 1940 ರ ದಶಕದ ತಾಲ್ಲೂಕು ಕಚೇರಿಯಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಕೀರ್ತಿ ಇವರದು. 93 ವರ್ಷವಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ, ಇನ್ನೂ ಅಧಿಕಾರ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಕೊಟ್ಟಿಲ್ಲ. ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಹಾವೇರಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ವಿ.ಕೃ. ಗೋಕಾಕ್ ಟ್ರಸ್ಟ ನ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷಗಿರಿ ಬೇರೆ. ಕಳೆದ 5 ವರ್ಷದಿಂದ ಇದುವರೆಗೆ ಹಾವೇರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಭೆ ನಡೆದಿಲ್ಲ. ಸದಸ್ಯರು, ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ಇಲಾಖೆಯ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿ ಪುಟ್ಟಪ್ಪನವರ ಮನೆಗೇ ಬಂದು ಸಭೆ ನಡೆಸಿ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಇಂತಹ ಚರಿತ್ರೆಯ ಪುಟ್ಟಪ್ಪ ಕಂಬಾರರಿಗೆ ಜ್ಞಾನಪೀಠ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಬಂದಾಗ “ಚಂದ್ರಶೇಖರ ಕಂಬಾರ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿಗೆ ಯೋಗ್ಯರಲ್ಲ, ಈ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಬೈರಪ್ಪನವರಿಗೆ ಬರಬೇಕಾಗಿತ್ತು,” ಎಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಒಬ್ಬ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಎಷ್ಟೇ ದೊಡ್ಡವನಿರಲಿ ವಯಸ್ಸಾದ ನಂತರ ತೆರೆಯ ಹಿಂದಕ್ಕೆ ಸರಿದು ತಾನು ತನ್ನ ಜೀವಿತದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಪಾದಿಸಿದ ಘನತೆ, ಗೌರವಗಳನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು. ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ, ಆತನ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ಬಾಲ ಲೀಲೆಗಳು ಎಂದು ಸಮಾಜ ಗುರುತಿಸಿಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ.
ಕಳೆದ ಎರಡು ವರ್ಷದ ಹಿಂದೆ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ರಾಜ್ಯಸಭಾ ಸದಸ್ಯನನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಿ ಎಂದು ಬಿ.ಜೆ,ಪಿ. ಸರ್ಕಾರದ ಬೆನ್ನು ಹತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಕಡೆಗೆ ಇವರ ಲೇಖನಗಳ ಪ್ರಕಟನೆಗೆ 50 ಲಕ್ಷ ರೂ ನೀಡಿ ಯಡಿಯೂರಪ್ಪ ಕೈ ತೊಳೆದುಕೊಂಡರು.
ಬಹುಶ: ಇವರ ಇಂತಹ ವರ್ತನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮುಂಜಾಗ್ರತವಾಗಿ ಗ್ರಹಿಸಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಕನ್ನಡನಾಡು ಇವರಿಗೆ ಪಾಪು ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರಿಟ್ಟಿರಬೇಕು.

ಜ್ಞಾನ ಪೀಠ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತವಾದ ಸಂಗತಿಯಿಂದ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರು ಸಂತಸ ಪಡುವ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಶಯ ಪಡುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿರುವ ನಮ್ಮ ಪಾಪುರವರ ಧೋರಣೆ ನಿಜವಾಗಲೂ ಬೇಸರ ಮೂಡಿಸುವ ಸಂಗತಿ…..

You are right. To read great poet like Bendre in the current form it really terrible experience. The printing is so bad and Vamana Bendre has no sense at all. What a tragedy sir.
ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ಜ್ಞಾನಪೀಠ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ಥಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಹರು ಎ೦ಬುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡು ಮಾತಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಕ೦ಬಾರರಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ಥಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿರುವುದರ ಕುರಿತು ಅವರ ಅಪಸ್ವರ ಸಾಧುವಲ್ಲ.
The comments of Dr Jagadish Koppa on both Vaman Bendre and Patil Puttappa are quite unfair to say the least.
Vaman Bendre by nature is an introvert and appears to be must misunderstood personality. Very few are aware of his potentials. He talks and thinks inthe same idiom of his illustrious father. The senior Bendre as is wellknown is more than a poet, visonary, social scientist and all that and his works can only be properly understood with the help of Vaman Bendre.
The Audumbar Gaatha has been shaped in the form of an epic, since senior Bendre had often described his life to be so thanks to the arduous and hard work put in by Vaman Bendre and Dr K S Sharma, and has been brought out by the Bendre Research Institute. A little more patience will help understanding the work.
The remarks about Puttappa also appea to be uncharitable. By remaining as the president of the Karnataka Vidyavardhak Sangha, for all these years, Puttappa has not built any empire about which others should feel jealous.
The Karnataka Vidyavardhak Sangha was in a very bad shape before Puttappa took over its stewardship and thanks to the advocacy of the cause, he has been able to get the assistance from the government to bring a name and stability to one of the oldest of the literary fora of Karnataka.
Incidentally I have been in Hubli for more than four decades and I have occupied a ring side seat to watch the major developments incluidng the evolution of Puttappa as zealous and unrelenting crusader for the cause of Kannada and evoluition of Vaman Bendre as a poet by his own right.
